Github today announced a text editor named Atom. Chris Wanstarath co-founder and CEO of Github says through Twitter the company has been working for over 6 years and “Super excited about today. It’s been a long journey to the Atom beta but we’re just getting started.”

Atom announced through their blog says Today, we are excited to launch the public beta of Atom, a new text editor that’s deeply programmable but also easy to use. A tool you can customize to do anything, but also use productively on the first day without ever touching a config file. Atom is modern, approachable, and hackable to the core. We can’t wait to see what you build with it.

We’ll be rolling out invites over the coming weeks, and we’ve open-sourced over 80 of the libraries and packages used in the editor.

Atom has been called as “A hackable text editor for the 21st Century.” Atom is completely open source and Github is encouraging developers to extend it as much as they want.
